Nature Deficit Disorder free essay sample

Transition statement: So now let me tell you where the term â€Å"Nature-Deficit Disorder† came from. II. Body A. Nature-Deficit Disorder is not a medical condition; it is a description of the human costs of alienation from nature. 1. Richard Louv, child advocate and author of â€Å"Last Child in the Woods† created this term to describe the disconnection between children and nature 1. The author says children are spending more time indoors, and when they do go outside, theyre most likely to be on their way to soccer practice or some other structured activity. 2. The result, he says, is that kids are out of touch with fields, streams and woods. 2. Our society (media, schools, etc.) are scaring children to stay indoors. 1. According to a study done by Sandra Hofferth at the University of Maryland, from ’97-’03, there was a decline of 50% of children 9-12 who spent time in outside activities. 2. According to Duke University Child and Well-Being Index, the rates of violent crimes against young people have fallen well below 1975 levels. 3. Technology has taken over our children and demands their attention 1. Television and gaming has become hard to compete with as far as entertainment 2. Studies conducted in association with the Kaiser Family Foundation, found that children ages 8-18 years old spent an average of 6.5 hours a day plugged in electronically! Transition statement: I have told you about the lack of nature in our children’s lives, now I’ll you the benefits of more exposure to nature. B. Could nature therapy be a new option for ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) treatment or even Autism? 1. Environmental psychologists reported in 2003 that that nature in or around the home, or simply a room with a view of a natural landscape, helped protect the psychological well-being of the children. 2. Adults and children alike, are just happier being exposed to the outdoors 3. The Human-Environment Research Laboratory at the University of Illinois, researchers have discovered that children as young as five showed a significant reduction in the symptoms of Attention-Deficit Disorder when they engaged with nature. 2. Television and junk food are linked to child obesity 1. The CDC found that the amount of TV that children watch directly correlates with measures of their body fat 2. Basically, more exercise†¦outside would help! 3. It makes me think about how nowadays you see children watching TV in the car on a road trip instead of observing the natural beauty right outside their window 3. Children need nature for a healthy development of their senses 1. As stated by Professor Robin Moore of N. Carolina State University, â€Å"Primary experience of nature is being replaced by the secondary, vicarious, often distorted, dual sensory (vision and sound only), one-way experience of television and other electronic media.† 2. Children live through their senses and this interaction with the outdoor world is essential for their healthy development 3. Autism is described as tunneled senses, and feeling of isolation and containment 4. Researchers have found that children with disabilities gain enhanced body image and positive behavior changes through direct interaction with nature. 5. Studies of outdoor education programs geared toward troubled youth — especially those diagnosed with mental-health proble ms — show a clear therapeutic value. Transition statement: Now that I have told you the benefits of outdoor play, I’ll now share with you some ways you can help encourage this with today’s  children. C. People who care about children and the future of the environment need to know about the research that’s been done in regards to this nature-deficit. 1. With a deeper understanding of the importance of nature play to healthy child development, and to their sense of connection to the world, we can create safe zones for nature exploration. a) We can preserve the open space in our cities, and even design and build new kinds of communities, using the principles of green urbanism. b) We can weave nature therapy into our health-care system, and nature experiences into our classrooms. 2. In education, we can build a No Child Left Inside movement. a) Today’s schools offer less and less recess, this needs to change! b) The Coalition â€Å"No Child Left Inside† was formed in 2007 to alert Congress and the public to the need for our schools to devote more resources and attention to environmental education. c) I encourage you to join this movement 3. As a parent and/or teacher, YOU can have the biggest impact on our children today a) Don’t just say â€Å"go outside play†Ã¢â‚¬ ¦yet go out with them show them what they’re missing, teach them! b) My students have three recesses’ a day†¦this is unheard of in most schools. c) Once children experience what nature has to offer they will most likely choose to go outside and â€Å"play† instead of â€Å"play† with electronics Transition statement: Now I will conclude†¦ III. Conclusion A. First I told you how Nature-Deficit Disorder came about, second, I told you the benefits of getting children outdoors, lastly, I told you what YOU can do to make a change. B. I highly encourage you to read the book, Last Child in the Woods, Saving our children from nature-deficit disorder, by national bestselling author, Richard Louv. C. So the next time you hear a child say â€Å"I’m bored† take them outside and climb a tree, build a tree house, go dig in the dirt; anything to get them away from the electrical world.

Why Your Dream Job Sample Essay Should Include Education?

Why Your Dream Job Sample Essay Should Include Education? In order to make sure that you get a resume written sample with the most useful information, there are several steps that need to be taken. Knowing what to look for will help you make sure that your resume writer does their job properly. When you are looking for a sample resume, the first thing that you should look for is a resume template that includes questions that allow you to include your resume information in a couple of different ways. For example, you can simply put your education up front. The second way to do this is to include other details about your education and career background. In this way, it will make it easy for your resume writer to write about the key parts of your resume. For example, if you have a degree in medical billing, it is important to put your education at the top of your resume. You could do this by using an arrow pointing to your education information on the right side of the page. Then, your nex t sentence would have a reference to your previous work experience, which is also highlighted. In some cases, your resume might require the use of quotation marks around your education. In these cases, your resume writer will want to know which specific programs or schools you earned your degree from.If you have earned a degree and are seeking a full-time position in that field, your education might be mentioned. For example, your resume might mention that you have earned a degree in accounting, which is a degree that is in high demand. If you are applying for a job with a full-time schedule, your education might not be mentioned. This is because these positions usually require that you have a college degree to be considered for the position. The reason that employers ask for this information is that a person with a higher educational background has a better chance of maintaining a more consistent work ethic than someone who just finished school. Many people assume that they will get a better chance at landing a job with this kind of college experience. However, in reality, people who have less experience usually do not get as many interview offers. This is because people with less education typically do not know how to effectively present themselves on an interview. This is why it is a good idea to hire a resume writer that is skilled in this area. You might get a bad resume from a resume writer who is not aware of how to use this information effectively. Therefore, you need to make sure that you are choosing a resume writer that is knowledgeable about this information. This is important because many times, employers will find out about this information when you begin to pursue your career and your job search.By using a resume that includes information about your education and career, you will be able to find a job that has a more stable future. In fact, your education could even have a positive impact on your chance of getting hired for this position.

Free Panera Bread Economics Essay

Free Panera Bread Economics Essay Panera Bread Strategy Panera ventured into a restaurant service known as fast food. This was after noting that customers were increasingly looking for special food, that which is a departure from the normal run-off-the-mill. The other thing was that the customers not only wanted the fast food affair, but also wanted quick service. The outcome of the findings was the conclusion that the consumers wanted a combination of fast food and high quality service (Barringer, and Duane, par 3). This made the owners of Panera adopt what we can now call Position Strategy. This is a characteristic of the restaurant industries that are called the First Casual. The terms are basically referring to speed and good quality. Their aim to harness the consumers through this has helped them become the leading bread caf companies in the USA. The table beloow explains this strategy well. The company hires well trained bekers with experience in baking.in all their chain of bekeries the bakers craft the bread from scratch to the end. They use the best ingredients to come up with high quality bread. The workers are also highly remunerated. They earn almost 30% higher than the closest competitor. Paneras services are very timely and they are also ready, or on hand. Swot Panera effectively identified its strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats, and their after working on them to come up with the leading strategy. Its strengths are: Panera is leading in the country. It has also won the award for sourdough bread. In addition to those, its food is of high quality and it has plausible customer loyalty. The weaknesses that Panera has are the inconsistent soup quality, dinner time amounts to small profits, the brand is not well known in new markets and the brand is becoming too common in St. Luis. The opportunities that are available are the increasing health awareness among the customers, and enough room for expansion. The potential threat is the increasing completion in the market. Strategic Management Issues Panera bread still face strategic management issues. The main problem is the ever rising comeption. This is because food chains and dines are responding to demand of fast food. This causes a very stiff competition to the restaurant industry. Good examples are budger King and McDonalds who are now venturing g into the fast food. The other thing is the rising cost of production. This has imposed downward pressure on Paneras operating cost. Panera has a food menu that is dominated by carbohydrate food. This may cause the customers to look for alternatives that are healthier. Like many industres and restaurants, Panera has been affected by global recession. This is a challenge that it is trying to deal with. Financial state Panera income has increased steadily through the pas three years. However its operating ioncome has come down because of rising cost of production. Wiki analysis shows that: Panera reported a net income increase of 38% in Q3 (ended September 29, 2009), growing from $13.7 million in Q3 2008 to $18.9 million in Q3 2009. Total revenue grew 6% from $315 million to $335 million, for with operating margins growing from 7.2% to 9.5%. Over the third quarter, Panera opened 19 new bakery-cafes in Q3, increasing its total to 1,362 total stores in operation by the end of Q3. Modern Culture in Western Europe and the US Essay

Modern Culture in Western Europe and the US - Essay Example The first argument is that like Germany, the U.S. insists on issuing driving licenses to teens more than 18 years of age. The U.S. has gone one step further by also requiring written consent from the teen’s parents before issuing not only a driver’s license but also a learner’s permit to teens (Smith: 10). This represents the strongest pro-teen driver argument that states, unlike other countries of the world, West European countries and the U.S. have strict driver licensing systems that contain severe training tests that must be fully and properly passed by teens before they get a driving license. The second argument concerns driver’s education programs in U.S. high schools (Haverstock) and the role of driving instructors (Smith: 9). This argument states that such school driver’s education programs give proper and sufficient training to teens in all matters related to driving, mainly traffic rules and the methods of operating, maintaining and even b riefly repairing motor vehicles. The knowledge got from the school driver’s education program is greatly strengthened when teens use the service of driving instructors. The instructors apply the ‘finishing touches’ to what has already been learned in school. The third argument is that, as compared to adults, teens rarely drive when drunk (Harrop). This argument raises the usual trend of teens not to drink and drive because drunk driving is easily the most common reason for road accidents. The argument further states that this good habit of teens is a clear indication that they are responsible members of society and our country who deserve to be allowed to drive. The fourth argument concerns the education level of teens. Teens are not illiterate morons but study in high schools and colleges where they are gaining a high level of knowledge as they are trained to be our country’s future. They are perfectly aware of the risks involved in rash driving and are r esponsible enough to decide for themselves if they are competent enough to drive.
